STRATEGY
Community is at the Centre
At Listowel Community Centre, our strategy is the foundation of everything we do. It guides our vision, shapes our goals and ensures that we remain focused on what matters most—our community. Rooted in a deep understanding of local needs and built through meaningful engagement with residents and stakeholders, our Strategic Plan 2025–2030 sets a clear direction for the next five years.
Strategic Plan 2025-2030
At Listowel Community Centre, our strategy drives every decision we make. It reflects our commitment to delivering value, fostering innovation and achieving sustainable growth. Our Strategic Plan 2025-2030 outlines the direction, goals and priorities for the centre over the next five years. The plan is informed by community feedback, local needs assessments and input from stakeholders. Our aim is to create an inclusive, vibrant and supportive environment – in a safe place that is welcoming, accessible, inclusive and affordable to all population groups which fosters community development and engagement, inclusivity, personal growth, economic growth and social well-being where “Community is at the Centre”.
Our Mission
Listowel Community Centre is committed to being a welcoming, accessible, inclusive and affordable hub for all populations. We strive to foster civic engagement and support multicultural communities through a variety of activities and programmes that promote overall health and wellbeing, social inclusion, quality of life, community development, empowerment, innovation and collaborations, to enhance socioeconomic development and long-term sustainability.
Our Vision
Our vision is to be a regional centre of excellence to promote recreation, sport, mental and physical well-being for all in the community – a centre which keeps community development at the heart of its ethos, embellishing the spirit of social entrepreneurship. Staff, management, the Board of Directors and members work together with a shared vision in a workplace that all stakeholders can enjoy, grow and develop.
Our Ethos
At the heart of everything we do is a simple yet powerful belief: “Community is at the Centre” of everything we do. It isn’t just a slogan, it’s our purpose – a purpose that drives every decision.
From daily fitness classes and sport of all types to events catering to all demographics, our centre exists to serve, support and celebrate the people of Listowel, North Kerry and beyond. This building is more than bricks and mortar, it’s a space where connection, community development, creativity and community come to life.
The centre is a place for everyone – our doors are open to all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Whether it’s to join us for a workout at BASE Gym, attend a loved one’s birthday party, play pickleball, attend a workshop or simply have a cuppa, you belong here.
Core Values
These six principles guide our strategy and decision-making. They are the foundation of our culture, shaping how we think, act and grow – both individually and collectively as a team. Each value reinforces our commitment to excellence, integrity and impact.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI)
Welcoming all members of the community in a safe, welcoming and vibrant environment – as per our EDI Strategy.
Accessibility
Ensuring physical, social, economic and cultural access to all demographics.
Collaboration
Working with diverse stakeholders including community members, local groups, partners, NGOs and businesses.
Empowerment
Supporting individuals, families, groups and businesses to thrive.
Sustainability
Managing resources responsibly for current and future generations, it is important that we are determined and proactive in our endeavours to continually innovate and collaborate our best efforts for our county of Kerry, our heritage town of Listowel and catchment area – beyond into the borders of Limerick, Cork and further afield, to engage with each other in a culture of equality, diversity and inclusivity (EDI), whilst demonstrating respect, transparency and honesty. We embed a culture of EDI, welcoming individuals and groups of all demographics to empower everyone, to actively engage in improving their potential and performance in the centre’s programmes and activities – in a positive environment where fun and enjoyment is tangibly evident, and everyone feels valued and respected.
Listowel Community Centre actively collaborate with our community, members, partners, NGOs and businesses to enhance our strategic socioeconomic plans, facility and operations, to improve sustainability practices and accessibility for all demographics thereby ensuring our sustainable efforts benefit the whole community, long-term.
Strategic Objectives
The centre’s Sustainable Community Objectives serve as a model for sustainable development, positively impacting the social fabric of our community, economic development and environmental commitments.
At the heart of Listowel Community Centre’s mission is our commitment to foster an inclusive, resilient and sustainable community. Our sustainable community aims focus on promoting long-term environmental stewardship, social equity and economic wellbeing. We aim to reduce our ecological footprint through improving green practices, supporting diverse and underserved populations through accessible programming and strengthening local partnerships to build shared capacity. By embedding sustainability into our operations, programmes and activities, we ensure that today’s efforts contribute to a healthier, more connected community for future generations.
The centre’s strategic objectives are grouped into eight key themes, each representing a critical area of focus that drives our mission forward. These themes reflect our priorities, guide our initiatives and ensure that our committed efforts align with long-term impact and sustainable growth. Collectively, they form a cohesive framework that guides our vision and informs decision-making at all levels. For example, under our environment sustainability commitment, we will achieve Near Net Zero Carbon operations by 2028. The hub will run an energy efficiency model when the building project is completed. As of June 2024, this project is shovel ready. On-going consultations with Quinn Architects are advancing the development, with demolition works scheduled to commence in Q4 2025.
