History of
Listowel Community Centre
Our Story – Where Community is at the Centre
Listowel Community Centre has witnessed many changes since opening its doors to the public. The support, commitment and dedication of many people working behind the scenes – for over three decades, is commendable. They devoted their time, passion and effort to make the plans for the centre successful. It is a welcoming, inclusive centre of excellence that embodies community development and promotes overall health, wellbeing, recreation, sport and social entrepreneurship. Under the helm of current manager Trevor Horan and the Board of Managment, Listowel Community Centre is undergoing exciting, transformational changes to refurbish and extend the building, to enhance its services.
In the summer of 1977 a Steering Committee was formed to endeavour to get a Community Council started in Listowel. The first meeting was held at the Listowel Arms Hotel, 7:30pm on May 19th 1977. Subsequent meetings were held and on May 3rd, 1978 at the inaugural meeting, rules were officially drawn up and adopted as the Constitution of the Listowel Community Council. Members nominated by public vote were accepted and seconded. Meetings were held on the first Wednesday of every month. The Committee researched the cost of halls around the country and began their own application in earnest. Their hard work came to fruition in 1981.
The sod was turned by the late Monsignor Sheahan with then Chairperson of the centre, Patsy O’Sullivan (RIP). Construction was carried out by M.A. Hannon and Sons and Listowel Community Centre opened its doors in 1985. The new centre was officially opened the following year – in November 1986, by An Tánaiste Dick Spring. Click here to read more.
