INCLUSION
Inclusion is on-going – EDI is long-term organisational commitment, not a project
Listowel Community Centre is committed to fostering an environment that is welcoming, inclusive and equitable for all members of our community – as per our Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI) Strategy. We are committed to delivering targeted, measurable outcomes that align with national frameworks and reflect the Government’s commitment to inclusive, community-based solutions. Our team is committed to empowering the community through inclusive growth, meaningful engagement and sustainable development. By embracing forward-thinking sustainable practices, we aim to create lasting value for current and future generations. Management’s commitment to sustainability is not just a guiding principle, it is integral to every initiative we pursue. Our efforts support on-going and ambitious plans to foster innovation, improve the overall quality of life for those we serve and enhance our community’s socioeconomic resilience.
Listowel Community Centre’s EDI Strategy outlines how we advance equity, celebrate diversity and embed inclusion across all levels of our work. Our EDI vision statement demonstrates that we are “Committed to strengthening our reach within the local community, removing barriers to inclusion and ensuring that everyone has equal opportunities to engage in fitness and wellbeing”.

INCLUSION AT BASE GYM
At BASE Gym we are committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for people of all abilities. We proudly support and accommodate individuals from various disability groups, ensuring that everyone has access to fitness and well-being. Our team is dedicated to making exercise accessible, providing adaptive exercises, personalised support and an inclusive space where everyone feels valued and empowered.
We believe that fitness is for all and we strive to break down barriers so that every individual can achieve their health and wellness goals in a supportive atmosphere.

SPORTS INCLUSION DISABILITY CHARTER
Base Gym Listowel is proud to be part of Ireland’s first-ever Charter dedicated to increasing the participation of people with disabilities in sport and physical activity.
Through this initiative, we are committed to strengthening our reach within the local community, removing barriers to inclusion, and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to engage in fitness and wellbeing. By working alongside Active Disability Ireland and Sport Ireland, we will gain valuable expertise and support to enhance accessibility in our programs.
This aligns with our mission to contribute to the goals of the National Sports Policy 2018-2027, fostering a more inclusive and active Ireland for all.

Base Gym is taking meaningful strides to become a more inclusive and accessible fitness space for all. With a firm commitment to supporting individuals of all abilities, the gym has introduced new initiatives and equipment aimed at removing barriers and empowering every member to achieve their fitness goals. A standout addition to the gym floor is the upper body ergometer—a versatile machine designed to improve cardiovascular fitness through arm-powered movement. Often referred to as an “arm bike,” the ergometer allows users to rotate hand pedals, similar to cycling with the upper body. It can be used from a seated or standing position, and it’s fully accessible to wheelchair users.
This equipment is especially beneficial for individuals with limited lower-body mobility, those recovering from injury, or anyone looking to build upper body endurance and strength. For people with additional needs, including neurological conditions or physical disabilities, the upper body ergometer provides a safe and effective way to engage in aerobic exercise without requiring weight-bearing movement. By investing in adaptive equipment and fostering a welcoming environment, Base Gym is sending a clear message: fitness should be for everyone. Whether you’re training for performance or simply looking to stay active, there’s space—and support—for you at Base

As I Am – Autism Friendly Town
Listowel Town received two inclusion awards – New Community Recognition and Sensory Accessibility Awards, at the As I Am Awards. Listowel Community Centre’s BASE Gym is proud to have played a part in achieving these awards and contributing to making Listowel an autism-friendly town. Inclusivity and accessibility are at the heart of what we do. We are committed to continuing our efforts to support our community.
